Riga

Riga

As one of the largest cities, Riga, the capital hosts a third of the total population of Latvia. Founded in 1201, the city occupies about 300 sq kilometers located at the Gulf of Riga. As one of the oldest cities, it has served as a UNESCO Global Heritage site and in 2014, the city was declared the European Cultural Capital. One of the unique features is the blend of photogenic Art Nouveau buildings characterized by splendid ornately decorated structures. In addition, the city boasts of a large central market known for the large supply of fresh produce and goods. The Riga central market is one of the biggest markets in Europe. Among the mind-blowing sceneries, the Freedom Monument in the capital is an outstanding beauty. Not to forget about the delicious food served in Riga.

Daugavpils

Situated along the banks of the Daugava River, Daugavpils is one of the best cities in Latvia which borders Lithuania and Belarus. The city is characterized by its nature, parks, lakes, and other scenery. The main denominations include Lutheran, Catholic, Orthodox, and Old Believers in a Christian-dominated society. One of the interesting facts about the city is the cultural essence with a theater and fortress which date back to the 19th century. These are among the major attractions which reveal the ancient classic and eclectic styles. Through these monuments and graphic surrounds, the essence of Daugavpils image is endowed. The town hosts a railway station and an international airport. Some of the common sports in the city include football, Speedway Grand Prix, and hockey. 

Liepaja

Among the major cities in Latvia, Liepaja is famous as an ice-free port and is commonly referred to as the “City where the wind is born.” The city is recognized for its windy weather hosting the largest wind farm in Latvia. Situated at the coast of the Baltic Sea in the southwest, Liepaja has an array of residential and industrial areas to the north of the lake. One of the most interesting sites is the Jūrmala Park which was planted in the 60s. The Libava fortress is a common destination set up by the Russian army to aid in protection. Also, the city is rich in architectural scenery with Art Nouveau buildings from the Soviet era and white sandy beaches. Christianity being the main religion, there are a number of churches including St Paul’s Baptist church and St Anna’s Lutheran church. 

Jelgava

On the southwest side of the capital, Jelgava city sits in central Latvia as one of the most beautiful cities. Famous for its fertile grounds, Jelgava is an ideal farming land sitting on the right bank of River Lielupe. The town has a major railway center connecting Riga to Lithuania and hosts the Airbase. Some of the common cultural sites include the Jelgava Palace, Jelgava Old Town, Cathedral of Immaculate Virgin Mary, and Jelgava Baptist Church. The city’s integration with culture is imminent with regular events such as the Ice Sculpture Festival, Latvian Plant Days, Jelgava City festival, and Summer Solstice among others. The Jelgava History and Art Museum and Adolf Alunan Memorial Museum are ideal destinations that attract many visitors annually in addition to the natural green parks. The city has a football team, FK Jelgava which is a part of Latvian culture.

The Abava Valley

Sabile

Located on the west side of the capital, Sabile town was established in the 13th century as home to the northern-most open-air vineyard. The wine-making tradition is a great culture in the city which is evident from the municipality’s coat of arms. The residents celebrate the annual Wine Festival in July which is a major attraction. Besides that, the city hosts the Open-Air Museum at Pedale Manor, which was made by Ojars Feldbergs. The Abava valley is another fascinating site with archeological features and old cemeteries.
