A visa application refusal can be a huge setback. It means the loss of a career opportunity for some, for others, it might be the loss of another opportunity. Not only the loss of opportunities, but a refused visa application also translates into the expenses one incurs, in terms of travel arrangements, accommodation cancellation charges, etc… Hence, the importance of following every aspect of visa application and requirements cannot be stressed enough.

Like the rest of the world, with changing global dynamics and spreading terrorist threats, Cyprus has strict rules and policies when it comes to awarding a visa also. Therefore, it is extremely important to avoid the fundamental mistakes people often commit while applying for a visa.

Failing to follow visa rules

Immigration is the first line of defense in any country’s security. The rules and policies guiding the immigration process, thus shall not be taken lightly. It is a serious business. An applicant must read and gather as much information as possible regarding these policies and regulations before applying for a visa.

Missing details of travel itinerary and documents

Details regarding the accommodation and traveling shall be provided in full. Applicants must ensure that no information is missing. Many applications are rejected just because the itinerary is not well articulated.

 Intent of visit

The purpose and intent of visiting the country shall be clearly stated. Remember, any discrepancy and/or ambiguity may lead to a declined application.

 Documentation

As explained earlier, documentation as and when asked shall be produced. All documents must be authentic, verified, and should match the actual information regarding the applicant. Fake, soiled, and misleading documents may result in a lifetime ban!

 Processing time

It is important to allow sufficient time for the embassies and consulates to work on your application. Some embassies take more time than others, hence there should be a gap of at least 2 months between the submission of the application and your traveling dates.

 Insufficient funds

Money to travel, accommodation, food, and basic subsistence are essential to have and the same should be proved in the shape of bank statements, income statements, tax returns, etc.

Criminal record

Needless to say that any country will not allow a person convicted of a crime, Cyprus is no exception either. An application of a person who has been charged or wanted for a crime in his/her home country and poses as a threat to Cypriot society or state will not see success.

Visa interview

Many countries conduct interviews with the applicants as the last step before awarding the visa. Cyprus’s immigration also calls on applicants and assesses the body language and other key criteria before visa approval. A poor interview will decrease the chances of a visa.

Ties with home country

Applicants who fail to establish beyond doubt that they have ties with their home country – such as family, business, education, employment, etc., anything that gives a solid reason for return – will have their application rejected in almost all cases.

Language

Naturally, the applicant’s academic and other documents are in his/her national language. Submitting them without getting them translated to the Cypriot national language is useless. As the authorities might not be able to verify the documents, leading to the rejection of the visa.

Ineligible sponsorship

The Cypriot immigration requires that the non-EU residents provide a sponsorship letter, in favor of the applicant. The said letter shall be on letterhead, properly signed, and stamped by the author. Any discrepancy found in the letter will lead to rejected visa.

Travel Insurance

Valid travel insurance that provides coverage in Cyprus is compulsory for all travelers. Applications without valid insurance are not entertained for processing.

Dubious travel history

People who have been deported, or flagged by immigration of another country, or illegally overstayed their stay in Cyprus previously, may not be granted a visa.

The appeal in case of rejection

An applicant can make an official appeal against the rejected visa within the stipulated time duration allowed by the Cypriot embassy. Such appeal is made through a legal firm, the cost of which is to be borne by the appellant.
