You can prove both your identity and Croatian citizenship with a passport. It is known in Croatian as a “putovnica,”, you must have it on you always whenever you go outside of the country.

No matter if you reside in Croatia or not, you are eligible to apply for and maintain it. You might have always resided in Croatia but never applied for it, or you might have recently received Croatian citizenship and now meet the requirements for a passport.

In-person application

You can apply for a passport at any administrative police station in Croatia, whether you live there. The applicant, parents of minors, or an authorized representative for incapacitated people must submit the request.

In an emergency, you can only submit an urgent request in person at a police station. It will be ready for collection in Zagreb within 48 hours, or within three days at any other administrative police station in Croatia.

Requirements

You must have these things on hand to do a passport application in person:

  • Police-provided request for issuance
  • Croatian citizenship documentation
  • Domovnica
  • A certificate stating that you’ve been added to the citizenship register from the registration office
  • The decision to apply for citizenship in Croatia
  • Osobna iskaznica or another proof of identification and Croatian nationality document
  • Photo for a biometric passport, 35 x 45 mm
  • Old passport (if you have one)
  • For minors, a birth certificate, and a citizenship certificate from Croatia
  • Proof of having paid the application fee

How to get a passport online with e-Graani (e-Citizen)

The e-Graani (e-Citizen) web application can also be used to request a passport if you have an electronic identity card known as an “osobna iskaznica”. It is not necessary to reside in Croatia to use this approach. Note that online requests for expedited service cannot be processed.

The prerequisites for e-Graani applications are the same as those for applications made in person at MUP.

The passport must be personally picked up at the police station, or it can be shipped to your Croatian home. You must choose a police station where you will pick up your passport if you don’t have a place to live in Croatia.

E-graani allows for the submission of a request for:

  • First e-passport issue
  • Replacement of the current passport
  • Issuance of a second passport of the same type (for consular representatives)

Payment fees

The identical paperwork needed to submit a passport application in person must be enclosed when submitting one online.

Please include scanned evidence of payment for:

  • 320 kn for an application fee
  • 350 kn if delivered to the applicant’s residence or place of stay

Your request will be turned down if you don’t include payment documentation.

It’s not required to include scanned images of the photos. From the MUP database, images, prints, and signatures will be taken.

How to pay from Croatia or online

The above-mentioned fees can be paid in person at a bank or post office or online with your Croatian bank.

Replace the placeholder for [YOUR OIB] in the model number with your OIB number in the preceding payment instructions so that your money is associated with you.

Processing Time

Your passport will be available for pick up after 30 days for ordinary applications. If you requested haste on the application, it will be prepared for issuance in Zagreb within 48 hours and in any other administrative police station within three days.

When applying abroad, extra processing time may be added.

A Croatian passport’s influence

A Croatian passport entitles you to visa-free travel to 149 nations and a visa on arrival in 44 additional nations. There are only 49 nations around the globe that demand a visa. Additionally, because Croatia is a member of the EU, its residents are free to travel and work anywhere inside the bloc.
